Peter is excited to be leading the Foundation’s increased focus on fostering educational experiences that support California’s adolescents to thrive. Peter has spent his career working to create educational systems with schools where all students engage in deeper learning and are well-known by educators.
Peter has deep expertise in education as a classroom teacher, manager of education initiatives, strategy consultant, philanthropic advisor, and organizational leader. He has worked extensively with K12 and higher education leaders on designing and executing equitable approaches to educating students. Peter is well-versed in the research base on education and adept at translating that research into policy and practice contexts. Before joining Stuart, Peter worked with philanthropic and education leaders while at Education First. Prior to that, he helped launch and lead the Learning Policy Institute. He also previously worked as a Manager at The Bridgespan Group and at Stanford University as the Director of the LEADS Network of eight urban school districts and project manager for the School Redesign Network. He also led an AmeriCorps literacy program supporting public schools in Oakland, CA; directed an international children’s camp in Freedom, ME; and taught elementary school in New York City, including as a founding teacher at a Coalition of Essential Schools’ member school.
Peter earned a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching with a focus on Elementary Education from Teachers College Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in Administration and Policy Analysis from Stanford University Graduate School of Education. His doctoral dissertation focused on district change to support high school redesign.
Peter lives in Berkeley with his wife, two daughters and Pua, the family dog. He loves to swim, hike, garden, and ride his bike when he’s not busy coaching his daughters’ softball teams and serving on the School Site Councils at Berkeley High and Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle Schools.
