High School Counselor FAFSA/CADAA Toolkit for Students Experiencing Homelessness
A toolkit to help high school counselors support students experiencing homelessness to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA).
Counselors are a vital part of every student’s school experience. As students begin to seek guidance on postsecondary opportunities and how to pay for college, it is imperative that school counselors meet with them to provide critical information. A recent study suggests that juniors who met 1-on-1 with counselors were 6.8 times more likely to complete the FAFSA.
JBAY, in partnership SchoolHouse Connection, developed this toolkit for high school counselors as they support students experiencing homelessness with completing the FAFSA/CADAA.
The toolkit includes tip sheets, a FAFSA/CADAA screening tool for homeless and foster youth, a timeline for financial aid and college applications, a sample Unaccompanied Homeless Youth Determination Letter, and frequently asked questions high school counselors may encounter.
