Districts and Systems of Schools

We have a long-term goal of improved statewide practices and policy, and a near-term focus on a range of education systems within each state.

Demonstrate, Seed, Spread

Investment in these districts and systems of schools will include documenting elements of success and challenge. We want to know what works not only in each case, but across the span of our investments at the local level. Our intent is to identify what elements can be applied to the larger system, either through replication of programs or as evidence for system-wide policy change.

Youth Development Approach

We look for districts and systems of schools that consciously apply core principles of youth development – engagement, strong relationships with adults and peers, self responsibility, and development of interpersonal skills – in their work with students.

Integrated, Comprehensive, and Transformational Educational Environments

The Stuart Foundation will identify and support a select number of districts and systems of schools that demonstrate an integrated, comprehensive, and transformational approach to ensure students are deeply engaged, have opportunities to learn, and will be positioned to succeed in school and life.

We seek to partner with select school districts, systems of schools, and community school initiatives to build a body of exemplar practices to inform and influence public policy.

Potential partners will demonstrate:
  • System-wide mission that all students can learn to high standards, and a commitment to provide opportunities for all students.
  • An educational program designed to meet the needs of all students, including individual assessment and individualized learning plans.
  • Teachers with expertise in content areas and effective teaching methods.
  • Principals and district leaders who create effective and engaging learning environments by setting high standards and providing guidance, support, and motivation for teachers, staff, students, parents and community toward the goal of helping all students do their best in their class work and in their relationships in the community.
  • Resources from the community that contribute to the educational process and connect students to opportunities outside of school.
  • Opportunities for parents, families, and guardians to be part of their child's educational success.
